PNEUMOTHORAX IN EMERGENCY X-RAY
•Air in the pleural space.
•Causes:
Fractured rib penetrates the lung parenchyma.
Rapid acceleration-deceleration.
Barotrauma – IPPV, cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
TENSION PNEUMOTHORAX
•Tension pneumothorax - air leak from lung parenchymal injury, increasing pressure within.
•Mediastinal displaced away, decreased venous return.
•Hemodynamically unstable, can progress to complete cardiovascular collapse.
•Supine radiograph: sharp mediastinal border.
•Contusion LLL – air bronchogram.
